
What I found interesting about this particular tree was the "CU" carved beneath the second "eye." Perhaps it was someone carving their initials, but on my more positive days I'd like to think that they defaced (no pun intended) the tree as a reminder to hikers that nature lives and breathes, and while trees can't really "see" you, acting without regard to our environment is seen and felt by everyone on this planet (I'm talking to you, whoever left the granola bar wrapper on the ground... some outdoorsman).
I'll admit that the letters also look like "FU"--which, of course, is quite another message, but maybe just as effective.
